LSM: Light Space Modulator [2008]

The prototypes for the LSM presented in this exhibition reflect the density of a city. The occupied space in a city such as Beijing reveals a layering of possible directional, rhythmic and uniform shapes. The flat shadows navigate an extension of solid form, seemingly real yet lost in the midst of all the chaos; this is a consequence of congestion.

This geometric metropolis represents power. It's buildings stand erect, tall, cumbersome and overpowering. It reflects the explosion of economic advancement, technological redefinition and surging forces. Cocooned within a central axis, the building are more linear than curvaceous. This is a city that wants to dominate. It dominates a central focal point and weaves shapes of uniformity, alignment and geometric accuracy.

Using architecture as the subject matter, LSM aims to invite the viewer to sense spaces that I have traced which, when presented to them, appear as though there is some kind of movement. The use of lights, reflections and digital projections will prompt this interaction. These drawing machines project outlines in light layered over images that have been paper cut at specific intervals in sequential form. This total immersion makes the viewer feel as if in a newly created space - a generic city of the imagination; a vision that unifies simple optical sensations.
